The Social Highground

I have been watching the new Obi Wan with the wife on Disney Plus. It’s had some negative reviews but we have really enjoyed (it has also reignited the wife's love affair with Ewan McGregor). It’s a classic tale of master and student of good vs evil. You know how this story plays out! There are so many parallels to social I almost don’t know where to begin.. Okay you got me 🤣 A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... There were companies, they needed revenue so they created industry and this functioned well but over time it became evil and untrustworthy. It became an Empire. Now at the head of this Empire was the Evil Darth Vader. But Vader didn’t start out like that. He was transformed and twisted by the dark side of the force. I’m sure you started out in business with aspirations. You actually had a meaningful desire to want to change the world with your products and services. But over time the money became the focus and your values eroded. And all the things that got you y

Welcome to the Social Upside Down

If you’re a big fan of the 80’s you will almost inevitably have seen (or heard) of stranger things. If not what rock have you been hiding under? The premise is simple. A rag tag bunch of (nerdy) 80's kids take on shady government types and a dark scifi/ horror underworld subtly referred to as the upside down, a mirror image of our universe (populated by all manner of nasty creatures). The homage to 80’s pop culture and movies is staggering. I’m going to (try) and draw some parallels to the way you currently run your business in 2022 and the upside down. The upside down is like a dark mirror image of what our world looks like. There are all sorts of monsters in there (none of them pleasant) all hell bent on invading and taking over our (digital) world. The Demogorgon (Sales) - Impervious to bullets, can heal quickly and has a heightened sense of smell. I don’t think I could of found a more obvious metaphor for traditional sales if I tried 😂 The Mind flayer AKA the shadow monster

The Way of the Creative 🥷 Part 1

Sales is a process that’s had every ounce of humanity stripped from it. As a creative I have always viewed sales with a certain amount of disdain. Even that word   sales   send shivers down my spine. Is it because it’s so at odds with the very act of creating? Why do I as a creative recoil in horror at the word? My Dad was a sales guy (still is and one of the best I know) but there is alway a certain tendency to want to buck the trend and carve your own path so I rebelled by being creative (there has always been a bit of a punk streak in me). A few years back my perception of sales and social selling changed forever. I listened to a Podcast by  Chris Do  and  Errol Gerson  called  contagious selling  go check it out In it Errol drops some huge wisdom as a creative about how creatives are actually the most well equipped people on the planet to sell. Because sales is storytelling, it's conveying your message in a human way to elicit an emotional buying state and there ain't no on
