Fear is the social mind killer

****Looking for a Video Version of this? Then head over to my YouTube Channel ***  So I got that public speaking thing out of the way last week and it was a whole lot less scary than I thought it would be (surprise, surprise). Funny isn't it, the tricks our squirrel brain plays on us? The unknown creates a vacuum that is not controlled by us and rationally analysed by the mind and it starts to run away with itself. And my brain (used) to get locked into that state very easily. When you experience trauma your brain and body stays in high alert mode. Looking for threats. You're constantly stressed and physiologically that ain’t good. I started watching one of my favourite films at the weekend again (for the umpteenth time and it's also one of my favourite books). Dune. It’s a classic hero's journey structure. SPOILER ALERT - Young man has powerful family, family is cast down and killed, boy begins his ascension into a man, gains superpowers and becomes the new ruler of ...

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Content (Or Picture them in their Underwear)

So yep this week I have to do some public speaking. It’s been a while and I’m a little rusty but I have an awesome team of people around me. The wonderful  Hayley   and   Rory   (who will I’m sure heckle me to death). I’m a a little bit nervous (which is always healthy I think). I have done some public speaking in the past but it’s been a while. But I know my subject area well (creativity and social media). I think fear of public speaking can easily be applied to creating and posting content as well. The fear of all of this stops you. What if I step up on stage and everyone laughs? What if no one engages? What if I get challenged? What if nobody likes it? WHAT IF's won’t get us anywhere in life. What it is, is a future scenario that you have just invented inside the little kaleidoscope going around your brain box. Guess what? It isn't real and it won't be until you post.  Without posting we won’t learn, by not learning we can’t create better content. By n...

Now you're talking social

When I went on holiday recently I was fascinated (as was the wife) by a group of deaf people all signing to each other. I could of watched them for hours. They were so expressive. Using their hands arms and body to really articulate what they were saying to each other. It was really beautiful to watch and it got me thinking about how basic language alone can be and how much can be misconstrued by it. But do we really talk enough? Probably not I’d venture. I was guilty of this for a long time. Would shut down and bottle things up and not share. It started getting me to think about language, culture and the way we pass on knowledge through the written word and how the internet and social media has turned that almost into a real time dance. Different forms of content (written word, audio, video and images, graphics and photography) allow us to communicate in even more varied ways to appeal to our audience. Talking with pictures and making memories is universally appealing - Evan Spi...
